A run of five consecutive birdies on his front nine on Tuesday helped Rigardt Albertse to a superb nine-under-par 62 in the second round of the Bushveld Tour’s Race to Q-School Golferade Series #2 at Reading Country Club.
Albertse, who carded a level-par 71 in the first round to be five shots off the pace, opened his second round with a birdie on the second. He clicked into top gear when he reached the fourth, and birdied all the holes up to the eighth. He dropped a shot on the ninth ahead of the turn, but birdies on 13, 14, 17 and 18 on his homeward nine took him to a one-stroke lead heading into the final round.
At nine-under, Albertse was one clear of Francois van der Walt and Nicholas Adams. Van der Walt was one of the leaders after a first-round 66, and he had a three-under 68 in the second. Adams had an eight-under 63 in the second round to go with his opening level-par 71.
Bryan Baumgarten was in fourth on seven-under and Ruan Groenewald and Stuart Krog shared fifth on six-under.
The Race To Q-School Series is made up of three separate series of events. Each has its own Order of Merit. The Golferade Series is the second of the three. The top four finishers from each series will receive paid entry fees into the Sunshine Tour Qualifying School in April.
