Thriston Lawrence carded one of five 63s on Friday as players in the DS Automobiles Open d’Italia at Circolo Golf Torino in Fiano, Torino, Italy on the DP World Tour went low in the heat.

Lawrence made six birdies and an eagle in his bogey-free performance, as he moved to six-under-par through 36 holes after a patchy two-over-par start to his campaign. That put him in a share of 24th.

He was nine strokes off the lead, after another of the players who carded a 63, Joaquin Niemann of Chile, also eagled the first hole and made six birdies to move to 15-under-par and a two-stroke lead over Angel Ayora of Spain, who also had a 63.

In a share of third on 11-under, four strokes behind the leader, were KLM Open winner Eugenio Chacarra of Spain and France’s Tom Vaillant, after ho-hum rounds of 65 and 66 respectively. With them was Matt Wallace, who set a course-record nine-under-par 62 with his 10 birdies and a bogey.

Wallace joked he may have put his Ryder Cup hopes in jeopardy after his course-record 62. Luke Donald’s long-standing vice-captain Edoardo Molinari had set the record of 63 on his home course on Thursday and after Wallace went one better with a closing chip-in birdie at the ninth, he smiled: “I’m not doing my Ryder Cup many favours, am I, by beating Dodo? I should have just two-putted it or something.”

Daniel van Tonder was in a share of 24th with Lawrence after his second round of four-under-par 67, while Dylan Frittelli and Branden Grace were on five-under in a share of 33rd.
