Amateur Jonathan Broomhead carded a closing four-under-par 67 on Friday to win the Bushveld Tour’s two-day event at Benoni Country Club.
Together with his opening two-over 73, he finished on two-under for the 36 holes, two shots ahead of Keegan McLachlan. McLachlan finished with a one-under 70 to go with his opening level-par 71.
Broomhead made six birdies and two bogeys in his final round, and he got things going early with three birdies in a row from the first hole. He bogeyed five and made birdie on nine. He started the homeward nine with a bogey on 10, but rectified that with another birdie on 11.
At that point, McLachlan with eagles on one and nine, as well as birdies on 11 and 13 to go with bogeys on three and seven, had the upper hand. But while Broomhead was parring his way to the 18th, McLachlan made bogeys on 15, 16 and 18 to relinquish his advantage.
It still took a birdie on 18, however, for Broomhead to pull one clear and claim the victory.
On level-par for the tournament in third place was another amateur, Liam van Deventer, and pro Jason Froneman shared fourth with yet another amateur, Hunter Walker at one-over for the 36 holes.
