Amateur Christiaan Burke birdied the final hole on Friday in the second round of the two-day Bushveld Tour event at Waterkloof Golf Club to hold on for a narrow one stroke win.

He held off the hard-charging Heinrich Bruiners, who came home with an eight-under-par 64 and an eagle on the last to share second with first-round leader Calvin Maia. Burke made five birdies and two bogeys on his way to his closing 69, and it took his birdie on the last to edge him clear of Bruiners and Maia.

It didn’t start too promisingly for Burke with a bogey on the first, but he picked up three birdies ahead of the turn. It went a little quiet for him while Bruiners was on a birdie spree. Burke made six pars in a row from the eight, but he finally picked up a shot again on the 14th. Two more pars and then a bogey on 17 that could have been calamitous – but he managed to make the crucial birdie on the par-five 18th to edge clear.

Amateurs Casey Jarvis and Noel Anderson shared fourth on nine-under after rounds of 67 and 65 respectively.
