Christiaan Burke birdied the 18th at Benoni Country Club in the qualifying round on Tuesday to play his way into this week’s Nelson Mandela Bay Championship.

Burke carded a four-under-par 68 with an eagle, three birdies and a bogey, and it was his fast start which set him up. He eagled the first, birdied the second, and made par on the par-three third, before dropping his only shot on the fourth.

His birdies on six and 18 put him one clear of Ruan de Smidt, Clayton Mansfield, Gerard du Plooy and Matthew Spacey, all on three-under-par.

Eight players finished on two-under, and, with only 10 spots available, three players fell out in a play-off for the remaining five places. Kyle McClatchie, Paul Bosshoff, Yurav Premlall, Jacques P de Villiers and Adam Breen made it through, while Aneurin Gounden, Samuel Simpson and Harry Konig of England were the unlucky losers.
