Dean Burmester battled through windy conditions on Thursday to card a two-under-par 70 on the North Course at Torrey Pines in the second round of the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open.

Starting his round on the 10th, Burmester got his scoring done as quickly as possible with three birdies in his first nine holes, and then he hung on, making just one bogey on his homeward nine. That took him to three-under for the tournament and a share of 20th ahead of the final two rounds on the more difficult South Course on Friday and Saturday.

The lead was held by American Sam Ryder, who signed for a four-under-par 68 on the South Course – players played a round on each of the Torrey Pines layouts ahead of the cut. Ryder, on 12-under through 36 holes, led by three from countryman Brendan Steele, with Argentina’s Tano Goya, a former winner of the Dimension Data Pro-Am, in third on seven-under.

Garrick Higgo, who had such a good start, struggled in the tough conditions, making a four-over 76 with two birdies, four bogeys and a double-bogey on the South Course. That saw him slide down the leaderboard into a share of 20th with Burmester.

Dylan Frittelli had a two-over 74 on the North Course to make the cut, while MJ Daffue had a calamitous 13-over 85 on the South Course to miss out on the final 36 holes.
