Dean Burmester confirmed his PGA Tour status in style on Sunday as he carded the low round of the day in the final round of the Korn Ferry Tour Championship in Newburgh, Indiana.

The reigning South African PGA Championship champion, Burmester had already earned his PGA Tour playing rights for the next season, but he made doubly sure as he blitzed the front nine with three birdies and an eagle to turn in five-under 31. He kept his card clean down the stretch, too, making two more birdies – on 15 and 16 – to sign for a seven-under 65.

That saw him climb 16 places on the leaderboard into a share of fifth at 17-under-par for the week. That was four strokes behind the winner, Justin Suh of the United States. Suh had a closing 68 to beat countryman Austin Eckroat by two shots. England’s Harry Hall and American Eric Cole shared third on 18-under.

For Burmester, it was a round which signposted just wat he can do on the PGA Tour when his game comes together: He was not as long as he usually is off the tee, averaging just under 310 yards, just over five down on his average for the week, but he was very accurate, hitting 12 of 14 fairways; he was deadly accurate approaching the greens, hitting all of them in regulation, and then he had 30 putts to round things off nicely.

Dawie van der Walt was unable to regain his PGA Tour card, with his closing three-under-par 69 not enough to get him inside the top 25 on the Korn Ferry Tour Finals List.
