Dean Burmester climbed to 107th on the Official World Golf Ranking with his victory on Sunday in the European Tour’s Tenerife Open, making him the 10th-ranked South African on the latest list.

Burmester, who was in 168th spot last week, climbed 61 places, and he is headed towards his highest ever ranking of 86th which he achieved after the Eye of Africa PGA Championship in 2016. His last European Tour win came in the 2017 Tshwane Open, and that took him to 95th in the rankings.

The other South African tournament winner last week was JC Ritchie, and while he doesn’t make it into the top 10 South Africans, his victory in the Bain’s Whisky Cape Town Open gave him an 81-place boost in the rankings to 182nd. His highest position came back in 2019 when he won the Zanaco Masters in Zambia. His Royal Cape win lifts him close to his 2020 year-end ranking of 178th.

South Africa’s top-ranked player remains Louis Oosthuizen, unchanged this week in 33rd after his share of ninth in the Valspar Championship on the PGA Tour. Christiaan Bezuidenhout is also unchanged at 40th, while the rest of the top 10 South Africans – bar Burmester – slipped a little.

South Africa still has nine players inside the top 100, 17 inside the top 200, and 26 inside the top 300. At the top end, the country is still punching well above its weight with nine percent of the 100 best players in the world from these shores.
