While the chase was on at the top of the leaderboard on Friday, Dean Burmester held station with a third-round level-par 72 in the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, California.
On the tougher South Course, where all the players who made the cut after a round on each of the North Course and the South Course, Burmester had a battling start with two bogeys and seven pars on the front nine. He got the scoring going with a birdie on the 13th, but then he made a double-bogey on the 15th. He rallied, though, with consecutive birdies on the final three holes.
At three-under for the tournament, he was in a share of 24th heading into the final round in a rare Saturday finish on the PGA Tour.
In the lead was Sam Burns of the United States on 12-under after he carded a level-par 72. But he was being pursued by the incredible Jon Rahm of Spain, who climbed into second on 10-under after a six-under 66. In third, two shots further back, was Tony Finau, also in hot pursuit after his eight-under 64 in the third round. Sungjae Im, Collin Morikawa, Max Homa and Sahith Theegala shared fourth on seven-under.
Also at three-under with Burmester, and also with a third round of level-par 72, was Garrick Higgo, who made four birdies and four bogeys in a round which was a good bounce back from his second round of four-over 76.
Dylan Frittelli remained at level-par for the tournament and in a share of 49th after his third-round 72.
