Dean Burmester played the final round of the PGA Championship on Sunday with world number one Jon Rahm, and he carded a two-over-par 72 to move to eight-over-par for the championship at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York.
That put him in 54th, one stroke behind Rahm, who signed off on a strangely subdued week with a one-over-par 71 to finish on seven-over in a share of 50th.
Up ahead, Brooks Koepka won his third PGA Championship and his fifth major championship with a dominant display in the final round. His closing three-under-par 67 was built on three birdies in a row in the first four holes of the day, and that made chasing him down a tough task after he led by one at 54 holes. In the end, Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland came closest, two strokes back on seven-under-par. Scheffler had a closing 65, and Hovland, with a double-bogey on the 16th, had a 68.
“This is probably the sweetest one of them all because all the hard work that went into this one, this one is definitely special,” said Koepka, who battled injuries between this victory and the 2019 PGA Championship.
The runner-up position for Scheffler meant he reclaimed the world number one spot from Rahm. But for a three-over 73 in the third round, he might have been the player holding up the Wannamaker Trophy. “It’s really hard to play four rounds under par, and if you do, usually you’re holding a trophy at the end. If I would have done that, that’s where I would be this afternoon instead of going home with second,” he said.
Thye other South African to make the cut was Thriston Lawrence, who closed with a four-over-par 74 to finish in a share of 62nd on 11-over-par.
