Dean Burmester carded a five-under-par 66 on Sunday to finish in a share of fifth after the 54 holes of the LIV Golf UK event at the JCB Golf & Country Club in Rocester, England.
His six birdies and a bogey after he started his round on the third hole in the shotgun start format of LIV took him to 10-under-par for the event. That was seven shots behind the winner, Joaquin Niemann of Chile, who took his fifth title of the LIV season 1t 17-under by three shots from Bubba Watson. Caleb Surrat was third on 13-under.
Niemann’s triumph came just a week after parting ways with both his coach and caddie following a missed cut at The Open Championship, making his emphatic response in Staffordshire all the more impressive.
In a tournament he led from start to finish, Niemann was dominant across all departments, ranking among the top performers in tee-to-green play and putting. As captain of Torque GC, he once again underscored his stature as one of the most consistent forces in LIV Golf. But it also made his non-performance in the majors all the more head-scratching, especially given the constant stream of social media suggesting LIV Golf-style play does not impact a player’s abilities in regular tournament play.
Charl Schwartzel also closed with a five-under 66 to finish on seven-under in a share of 11th. Branden Grace was on five-under after his 69 and in a share of 21st, while Louis Oosthuizen was one stroke further back in a share of 25th after his closing 66.
