Dean Burmester threw the kitchen sink at it on Sunday, and his seven-under-par 64 in the final round of the Korn Ferry Tour’s Albertson’s Boise Open fell one short of a place in the play-off which decided the tournament.
In the end, however, his share of fourth behind winner Will Gordon and runners-up Philip Knowles and MJ Daffue, will have boosted his chances of finishing the Korn Ferry Tour’s three-tournament Finals Series well inside the top 25 of the Finals Eligibility points list, thus gaining a coveted PGA Tour card.
While winning this tournament was not necessary for success in his mission – nor is it a prerequisite for the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship this week and the Korn Ferry Tour Championship on September 1 – Burmester chased the win from the start of the final round in Boise.
Such aggression was always going to cost him, and he bogeyed the first hole of the day. But he had made four birdies by the time he reached the seventh hole, where he dropped a second shot. Nonetheless, he birdied nine to turn in three-under, and then picked up two more birdies on 10 and 12. His third and final dropped shot came on the par-three 13th, before he pushed hard for home with three consecutive birdies from the 14th to the 16th.
It was an impressive performance from the 2021 South African PGA Championship winner and the man who finished 11th in the Open Championship this year. He hit the ball long, as he usually does, but he had his best day in terms of accuracy off the tee, hitting nine of 14 fairways, and he was even more accurate into the greens as he hit 15 of 18 greens in regulation.
His share of fourth sets up the rest of his campaign nicely, and, with Burmester being such a confidence-drive player, he certainly looks set to be able to play on the PGA Tour in the 2022-23 season.
