An eagle and seven birdies in betterball play on Saturday saw MJ Daffue and Erik van Rooyen climb 15 places in the third round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans at TPC Louisiana into a share of 13th in the PGA Tour’s only team event of the season.

Daffue contributed five birdies to the tally, and Van Rooyen made the eagle on the 11th and two birdies as the South African duo reached 54 holes in 19-under-par. That was seven shots behind the leaders, Wyndham Clark and Beau Hossler of the United States, who had a 10-under 62 to move one clear of American Keith Mitchell and South Korea’s Sungjae Im. There were three teams in a share of third on 23-under-par.

The final round will be foursomes – ‘alternate shot’, per the American usage – which was a challenge for Daffue and Van Rooyen in the second round when they managed just a two-under-par 70.

South Africa’s Dylan Frittelli is partnered with German Matti Schmid, and they climbed five spots into a share of 24th with a seven-under 64 in the third round.
