Amateur Werner Deyzel carded a five-under-par 66 on Wednesday to win the IGT Challenge Tour’s Road to the Sunshine Tour #1 at Wanderers Golf Club by one shot.
While his was the best round of the day, he was also able to take advantage of the fact that overnight leader Caylum Boon was simply unable to get anything going consistently as he carded a five-over. In the end, a closing birdie on the 18th was good enough for Deyzel to overtake Boon as he reached four-under for the tournament.
Behind Boon, who finished on three-under for the 54-hole tournament after a round that had an eagle, two birdies, five bogeys and two doubles, Wayne Stroebel and Ryan van Rosenveldt finished in a share of third on one-under.
Deyzel started his round with his only bogey for the day coming on the first, but he was pretty much flawless after that. Birdies on two, three and seven put him right in the mix as Boon slipped from eight-under overnight to three-under as he turned in 41. Deyzel, in the meanwhile, made three more birdies on his way in, on the 10th, 12th and 18th. Boon got things together with an eagle on 10, and a birdie on 12, but he was unable to hold it together and Deyzel’s birdie on the last saw him take the win.
Deyzel’s round was one of only two under par for the final round. Stroebel was the other player to dip under that mark with his three-under-par 68.
