Du Plessis, Germishuys the only SA winners on world rankings this week

In another week of bloodletting for South African players on the Official World Golf Ranking list, Hennie du Plessis was one of only two players in the country’s top 20 to gain places – and they did so without raising a club in anger.

Du Plessis was up two places to 228^th, and he is not in action this week either as the Sunshine Tour goes to Zebula for the first of the Vodacom Origins of Golf events and the DP World Tour takes yet another week off.

Deon Germishuys, in the same boat as Du Plessis, was also up two places to 266^th, and he will be in action at Zebula this week to see if he can gain some ground on the world list.

Other than Du Plessis and Germishuys, the only other South African inside the top 20 according to the world rankings list who did not lose ground was Casey Jarvis, who stayed at 244^th. The Challenge Tour’s number one is in action this week in Scotland, and a good showing there can get him on the rise again.

For the rest, it was red numbers all around, and the country’s top player, Thriston Lawrence at 95^th, could slip outside the world’s top 100 as he, too, waits for the DP World Tour carries on its inexplicably lengthy summer break. It seems crazy to wait for autumn to set in before resuming play after taking some time off after the conclusion of the Open Championship last month.

Also in danger of dropping out of the world’s top 100 is Christiaan Bezuidenhout, who has not made it into the FedEx Cup play-offs on the PGA Tour, and, at 96^th, he will have to wait until next month to get a chance to go again in the United States.
