Paula Reto eagled her fourth hole on Thursday on her way to a three-under-par 69 in the first round of the LPGA Tour’s TOTO Japan Classic at Seta Golf Course in Otsu, Shiga, Japan.
Starting her round on the 10th, she birdied her first hole and then made an eagle three on the 13th. Two more birdies on her front nine, and she turned in five-under-par 32. Unfortunately, she made two bogeys on her way home without picking up any more strokes.
That left her in a share of 15th after the first round, four strokes behind the lead. Japanese golfers Nasa Hataoka and Miyu Yamashita each shot seven-under 65 to stand atop the leaderboard after the first round. Shin Ji-yai of South Korea was a stroke off the lead and three more Japanese — Chisato Iwai, Akie Iwai, and Minami Katsu — were just two shots behind. In a very tight field, eight others golfers were just three off the pace. This included Minjee Lee of Australia. Lee won the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship earlier this year, her third major title.
With just this tournament and the Annika next week ahead of the CME Group Tour Championship, Reto was projected to climb six places to 77th on the rankings. She needs a strong finish in Japan and in the Annika to make it inside the top 60 who play the final event.
