Ernie Els charged hard on Sunday but fell just one shot short of the winner in the PGA Tour Champions PURE Insurance Championship, with his closing eight-under-par 64 leaving him in a share of second.

Els made five birdies on the front nine, and three on the way home with no dropped shots, but he was unable to haul in Steve Flesch of the United States who carded a closing four-under-par 64. Els shared second with New Zealand’s Steven Alker and Paul Stankowski of the United States.

Els’ charge saw him climb 16 places on the leaderboard during the final round, and two places to sixth on the Schwab Cup Money List.

David Frost missed the cut after two rounds of 75.
