Ernie Els carded his best round of the week on Saturday, and his four-under-par 69 lifted him into third place at the finish of the PGA Tour Champions’ Trophy Hasan II on the Red Course at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Rabat, Morocco.
Els started the final round in fifth place, and he made six birdies and two bogeys to finish the tournament on seven-under-par. That put him four strokes behind the winner, Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain, who also closed with a four-under 69 to beat New Zealand’s Steven Alker into second place by two shots.
The European Legends Tour’s top player, Adilson Da Silva, finished in fifth place after his closing one-under 72 took him to four-under-par for the tournament.
Retief Goosen closed out a poot week with his best score, a one-over-par 73. That saw him slide to 11-over for the tournament and a share of 57th.
Els, after winning the season opener, slipped one place to second on the Charles Schwab Cup list.
