The PGA Tour Champions Chubb Classic at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida, was cut to 36 holes by weather, but Ernie Els managed a second-round three-under-par 69 to finish in a share of third on Sunday.
Highlighted by four consecutive birdies on from the fifth to the eighth, and nine total birdies, Stephen Ames of Canada posted an eight-under 64 in his ninth Chubb Classic start to take the title. After his opening 67, he reached 13-under-par and won by three shots from Rocco Mediate of the United States.
With Els in a share of third were Paul Broadhurst of England, Australian Mark Hensby and Germany’s Alex Cejka. Els made five birdies and three bogeys in his closing round.
A four-time winner in 2023, Ames won again Sunday without needing to ever strike a shot. The final round at Tiburon Golf Club’s Black Course was washed out because of a massive storm that blanketed southwest Florida with steady rains.
