Ernie Els finished off the opening tournament of the PGA Tour Champions 2022 season with a two-under-par 70 and a share of sixth place in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai in Hawaii.

Els was leading going into the final round, but was overtaken by, amongst others, Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain and Stephen Alker of New Zealand who carded a pair of 66s. Jimenez won the play-off on the second extra hole. Vijay Singh and Stephen Ames shared third, and David Toms was in fifth.

Els made four birdies and two bogeys in his closing round, and shared sixth with countryman Retief Goosen. Goosen carded a closing three-under 69 with five birdies and two bogeys.
