Ernie Els lost out on the title in the PGA Tour Champions’ Dominion Energy Classic on Sunday when Justin Leonard eagled the final hole to pip him at the line at the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia.

Els had a closing round of level-par 72, and the three bogeys he made probably cost him the title as much as Leonard’s eagle did. The Big Easy led from the first round, but he surrendered that lead with his third bogey of the day on the 17th hole.

Leonard overcame a three-stroke deficit in the final round to capture his second victory of the  season with a one-stroke win over Thomas Bjørn and 36-hole leader Els. Els, who moved from fourth to third in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, recorded his best finish and fifth top-10 at the Dominion Energy Charity Classic in six starts.

The tournament was the first of the three Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs events and featured 69 of the top 72 available in the standings. The top 54 after this week advanced to next week’s Simmons Bank Championship in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Retief Goosen was also up one place in the standings from eighth to seventh after his share of fifth place with his closing 71.
