Ernie Els carded a three-under-par 67 on Thursday in the first round of the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio to be in a share of third in the year’s fourth senior major championship.
Els shared third with Jerry Kelly of the United States after making four birdies and a bogey in his opening round. They were three shots off the lead which was held by Alex Cejka of Germany, who was bogey-free in his six-under 64. Cejka led by two from American David Toms.
Retief Goosen had an opening two-over-par 72 to be in a share of 44th, and David Frost was on five-over in a share of 71st.
Eight players were in a share of fourth, one-stroke behind Els on two-under, including Rocco Mediate and Miguel Angel Jimenez.
