Ernie Els closed with a three-under-par 67 on Sunday to miss out on a spot in a play-off by just one stroke in the PGA Tour Champions Sanford International at Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Els, the number-one ranked player in the PGA Tour Champions Charles Schwab Cup, made six birdies and three bogeys in his final round as he pressed in an attempt to chase down Steve Stricker of the United States and Australia’s Richard Green. They both finished on eight-under-par, one ahead of Els and Bernhard Langer of Germany, who also had a closing 67. Stricker prevailed on the fourth hole of the play-off.

Retief Goosen had a closing one-under-par 69 to climb into a share of 24th on level-par for the tournament.

Els maintained his position at the top of the Charles Schwab Cup list, while Stricker’s third win in three years in the tournament elevated him to fifth. Goosen climbed one place to 18th on the list.
