Ernie Els kept himself in the mix on Saturday with a level-par 70 in the third round of the PGA Tour Champions Kaulig Companies Championship at Firestone Country Club on Akron, Ohio.
Els had got it to three-under for the round with three birdies and no dropped shots up to the 10th hole in the third round, and it looked as if he may me at the top of the leaderboard as he headed for home at eight-under. But he dropped three shots in four holes from the 13th to slip back to level-par for the round.
At five-under for the tournament, he was in a share of fourth, two shots off the lead which was shared by Harrison Frazar of the United States, and, inevitably, Frazar’s compatriot Steve Stricker, who carded a five-under-par 65 to hit the front. They led by one from 2009 Open champion Stewart Cink who had a level-par 70 in the third round. Els shared fourth with KJ Choi of Korea.
Retief Goosen had a one-under-par 69 in his third round to climb to level-par for the tournament and a share of 14th. He was one behind the evergreen Bernhard Langer of Germany.
