Ernie Els couldn’t buy a birdie on Sunday as he carded a closing three-over-par 75 to slip to an 11th-place finish in the PGA Tour Champions Chubb Classic at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida.
Els made two bogeys on the front nine, and then another on the 14th as he finished the 54-hole tournament on seven-under-par. That was eight strokes off the winning 15-under-par set by Justin Leonard, who won his first PGA Tour Champions title with his closing four-under-par 68.
Leonard was four shots clear of fellow-American Billy Andrade, and Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland was a further shot back on 10-under-par in third.
The finish did take Els up one position on the Schwab Cup standings, however, to number one.
