Fast start for Van Rooyen in modified stableford Barracuda Championship

In the first round of the modified stableford format of the PGA Tour’s Barracuda Championship in Truckee, California, Erik van Rooyen turned his fast start into a share of 14th on Thursday.

Van Rooyen made a birdie on the second for two points and an eagle on the third for five points to jump out to seven points through three holes. He two bogeys to lose two points and three more birdies to pick up six, and, at 11 points, he was five points behind the leader.

Up front on the Old Greenwood course at the Tahoe Mountain Club, Ben Martin made nine birdies and two bogeys to lead by two points on 16 from Nick Watney and David Lipsky.

Van Rooyen, a former champion in the event, shared 14th with Dylan Frittelli who made seven birdies and three bogeys.

Jacques Kruyswijk was on eight points, Richard Sterne on four, and Robin Williams on three. Thomas Aiken, MJ Daffue and Garrick Higgo were on two points, and Casey Jarvis was on minus three.
