Kyle McClatchie, who won the Freddie Tait Cup as the leading amateur in the tournament in 2018, was one of 12 qualifiers into this year’s Investec South African Open Championship after three qualifying rounds on Tuesday.
McClatchie carded a four-under-par 68 at Selborne Park Golf Club to get into the main event, co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and the DP World Tour, which tees off at Durban Country Club on Tuesday.
That was two strokes behind the winner there, Keagan Thomas. With McClatchie on four-under-par was England’s Brandon Meads, and Fredrik From, a Sunshine Tour veteran from Sweden, was the fourth man in on three-under.
From had to defeat Garry Kemp, Ryan Tipping and amateur Andre van Zyl for that final spot.
At Umhlali Country Club, Rhys West and Herman Loubser each carded four-under-par 67 to lead the four qualifiers there. The only amateur to qualify came at Umhlali, as Sean Paxton signed for a three-under. He and Quintin Wilsnach edged out Jake Redman for the final spots in the main field.
At The Woods at Mount Edgecombe, Keelan van Wyk led the way with his seven-under-par 63. England’s Jack Hawksby had a five-under-par 65, and Ethan Smith and Johan Theron got the last two places in a four-way play-off with LB Boshoff and Denmark’s Jacob Olesen.
