The final round of the PGA Tour’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans on Sunday was always going to be a challenge for the players with its foursomes format for the only team tournament on the tour, and Dylan Frittelli managed to limit the damage with his partner.
Frittelli, partnered with German Matti Schmid, carded a level-par 72, but it took a closing eagle for them to keep from going over par after two birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey through the first 12 holes. They finished on 17-under for the tournament after betterball rounds of 66 and 65 in rounds one and three, and an opening ‘alternate shot’ offering of 68 in the second round.
That put them in a share of 26th, behind winners Nick Hardy and Davis Riley, who closed with a 65 to move to 30-under and beat Canadians Adam Hadwin and Nick Taylor, who had a superb 63 in the foursomes to move to 28-under. Americans Wyndham Clark and Beau Hossler, who led for much of the tournament, closed with a 71 to slip to third on 27-under.
Erik van Rooyen and MJ Daffue, who were the best performing of the three South Africans in the field, battled through the foursomes to a two-over 74 in the final round, and shared 26th with Frittelli and his partner.
