Dylan Frittelli was faultless in his opening round on Wednesday as he carded a five-under-par 67 on the North Course at Torrey Pines in the first round of the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego.

Frittelli made three birdies on the opening nine, on six, seven and nine, to turn in three-under-par 33. After that it was par all the way until the 17th, where he made eagle three on the 520-yard par-five after using his length off the tee to reach the green in two.

His 67 left him four shots off the lead set by Billy Horschel, also on the North Course. Horschel made nine birdies and dropped no shots on his way to his 63, which gave him a one-stroke lead over American countryman Michael Thompson, with Germany’s Stephan Jaeger and Kevin Tway of the United States in a share of third on seven-under-par.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout opened with a three-under-par 69 on the North Course to be in a share of 38th place. Dawie van der Walt carded a one-under-par 71, also on the North Course, and was in a share of 76th with Rory Sabbatini.

The first two rounds are played alternately on the North and South courses, before the cut is made and the final two ruins will be played on the South Course.
