On a windy day in Bahrain on Friday, Dylan Frittelli held things together well enough to sign for a four-under-par 68 in the second round of the DP World Tour’s Bahrain Championship at the Royal Golf Club.

He started his round on the 10th, made two birdies ahead of the turn and picked up another on the third. He dropped a shot on the fourth when he three-putted from 47 feet, but he made two more birdies on the way in to get into a three-way share of the lead at nine-under-par.

He shared the lead with Joel Girrbach of Switzerland and Sweden’s Jesper Svensson. Girrbach had a solid two-under 70, but Svensson defied the conditions for his superb seven-under 65. It was the best round of the day, followed by a solitary 67, and then a few 68s like Frittelli’s.

Two strokes behind Frittelli, in a share of fifth place, was Ockie Strydom, who signed for a second-round 71 to move to seven-under at the halfway stage of the tournament.

One shot further back was Zander Lombard, who birdied the eighth and the ninth, his final holes of the day, to get to one-over for the second round. At six-under, he was in a share of 10th.

On a day on which the dusty desert wind blew away the chances of most of the South Africans of making the cut, Jacques Kruyswijk showed fortitude in hanging on for a level-par second-round total through 17 holes. With play suspended for fading light, he has just his last hole to complete in the morning. At three-under through 36 holes, he’s not out of things if he is able to have a string weekend.

Missing out on playing over the weekend were Casey Jarvis, Louis de Jager, Jaco Prinsloo, Brandon Stone and Jayden Schaper.
