Two eagles in successive holes on Monday saw Jason Froneman race to a 10-under-par 62 in the first round of the Bushveld Tour’s Bushveld Series #3 at Glendower Golf Club.

His bogey-free effort on one of South Africa’s most challenging layouts gave him a comfortable six-stroke lead over his nearest pursuers in the 36-hole tournament. In a share of second on four-under were amateurs Dillon Germishuys and Morris Schniefner, as well as Tyrone Ryan and Yurav Premlall. In a share of sixth, one stroke further back on three-under, were Sunshine Tour Order of Merit winner Ryan van Velzen, Warwick Purchase and Graham van der Merwe.

Froneman started with a par on the first, but he then made three birdies in a row to get off to a fast start. His first eagle came on the par-four seventh when he holed his approach shot, and his second was on the par-five eighth. A birdie on nine saw him turn in an astonishing eight-under 28.

There was no maintaining that pace on his homeward nine, but he didn’t drop any shots while picking up birdies on the two par-fives, the 13th and 15th.
