For the second week in a row, our Golfer of the Week award had to wait until play was finished on Monday in the PGA Tour’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am – just in case there was something unexpectedly good there. There wasn’t, and, in any case, it’s tough to overlook Darren Fichardt for the top spot.
The veteran didn’t go on to win the Sunshine Tour’s Bain’s Whisky Cape Town Open, but his third-round 10-under-par 62 was eye-poppingly good. It was a round which brought back memories of some of the best rounds of his career which has produced 18 wins on the Sunshine Tour.
He has had a 61 on the tour, his best round, but, under the circumstances – and even though there were preferred lies in operation – his bogey-free 62 was perhaps more impressive. It announced that he is far from a spent force at nearly 48, and that any attempt this season to regain a place on the DP World Tour could well give him another chance at adding to his five titles on that circuit.
His 62 included an eagle and eight birdies, and one-putted no fewer than 12 times in the round. It took him into the lead, and put pressure on all the players who had dominated proceedings to that point to produce a final round that would be worth of a champion.
For all that, Darren Fichardt is our Golfer of the Week, brought to you by
