Retief Goosen matched the low closing round of the PGA Tour Champions season-opener, the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai Golf Course in Ka’upulehu-Kona, Hawaii, but it was only enough to give him third place.
Goosen’s eight-under-par 64 matched winner Stewart Cink’s closing round, but Cink went bogey-free with eight birdies, while Goosen had an eagle, seven birdies and a bogey. The two-time major-winning South African Hall of Famer finished on a total of 18-under-par.
Cink had all but won the title with his second round of nine-under-par 63, which put him well clear of the field after he had opened with a six-under 66. Angel Cabrera of Argentina was his closest challenger after the second round, with his 62 putting him just one off Cink’s lead.
Cabrera’s closing 66 meant he finished three behind Cink, who was on 23-under. Goosen finished on 18-under-par, one ahead of countryman Ernie Els, Dane Thomas Bjorn and Sweden’s Freddie Jacobson. Els finished with a final round of six-under-par 66.
Cink won his second straight event after closing last season with a victory in Phoenix in the Charles Schwab Cup Championship. He has five senior titles.
