Coert Groenewald carded a five-under-par 65 on Tuesday in the Jonsson Workwear Open Qualifier at The Woods at Mount Edgecombe to lead 10 players into field of the main tournament which gets underway later this week.

Groenewald had a one-stroke advantage over fellow South Africans Chris Swanepoel and Cameron Moralee, as well as Germany’s Freddy Schott. Jack Duthie and Colin Nel were on three-under, while the other qualifiers were Siyanda Mwandla, Clayton Mansfield, Gordon Neal of the United States and Botswana’s Stuart Smith.

Groenewald had a bogey-free journey around the par-70 Mt Edgecombe layout, with an eagle-two on the 376-yard fourth and three birdies.
