Carlo Heunis made a double-bogey five on the eighth hole at Benoni Country Club on Wednesday, but he signed for a two-under-par 70 to move into a two-stroke lead after the second round of the Sunshine Tour’s Qualifying School-First Stage.
Heunis also picked up four birdies to move to five-under-par through 36 holes. That was two shot clear of Brandon-Lee Geere, who had a one-under-par 71 to add to his opening 70.
The two players who were in a share of third on two-under-par, amateur Dehan Joubert and Irishman Rohan Lester, had the best rounds of the day as each carded three-under-par 69.
Brandon Gildenhuys of South Africa, Sweden’s Daniel Palmquist and American Thomas Strandemo shared fifth on one-under-par, and were the only other players under par through 26 holes.
