A run of four birdies in a row down the stretch on Sunday was just not enough for Garrick Higgo as he ended up finishing second in the PGA Tour’s Sanderson Farms Championship at the Country Club of Jackson in Mississippi.

In the end, Higgo will look back at the three bogeys he made in the final round – one on the sixth and two on a row after the turn on the 10th and 11th – as what stood between him and what would have been his second win of the season on the PGA Tour.

Steven Fisk of the United States fired an incredible eight-under 64, including four birdies in his last five holes and three in a row to close out his day. In the process, he became the fourth rookie to win on the PGA Tour this season, along with William Mouw (ISCO Championship), Aldrich Potgieter (Rocket Classic), and Karl Vilips (Puerto Rico Open).

It came down to the wire between Fisk and Higgo, who were battling through most of the finale. Higgo opened the door with back-to-back bogeys on 10 and 11, but he got those back and then some, however, making four birdies in a row on 13 to 16.

Higgo missed a three-footer on the penultimate hole, though, while Fisk hit his approach to just two feet on 17 and made the go-ahead birdie, which turned out to be the difference.

“Garrick was playing so well today, especially down the stretch. I told my caddie we needed another birdie to try to close this thing out,” Fisk said. “The way Garrick was playing there coming down the stretch, he wasn’t going away.

“Based on the scores earlier this week, I didn’t have a target score in mind today, but I knew it was going to require more birdies than anything else. Just trying to make as many as I possibly could because I knew I’d need them at the end.”

Christiaan Bezuidenhout closed with a five-under-par 67 to move to 17-under-par for the week and a share of sixth.

Thriston Lawrence was in a share of 48th after signing off with a one-under 71 and Erik van Rooyen carded a one-over 72 to finish in 66th.
