Just like anyone else, Garrick Higgo had no answer on Sunday to the relentless churn that is the winning streak of the world number one, and the South African finished in a share of seventh in the PGA Tour’s Procore Championship.
Higgo’s closing one-under-par 71 on the North Course at Silverado Resort in Napa, California, took him to 14-under-par for the tournament, while Scottie Scheffler carded a five-under-par 67 to chase down his Ryder Cup teammate Ben Griffin to win by a single stroke on 19-under-par.
The tournament was part of the PGA Tour’s ‘Fall Series’, during which players who fall outside the top 70 on the FedExCup rankings are given opportunities to improve their positions in the chase for places inside the top 100 who will be assured of starts in all tournaments outside the Signature Events next season.
Unfortunately for Higgo, the presence of some of the top players in the tournament because of the proximity of the Ryder Cup meant that even his top-10 finish was not enough to see him climb from his 86th position on the rankings. Instead, he dropped two places to 88th. However, because of his win on the PGA Tour this season in the Corales Puntacana Championship in April, he retains eligibility for next year.
