During a week when representatives of South Africa’s professional golf’s ‘new wave’ didn’t feature much at the US Open, in the absence of the ‘old guard’, it’s perhaps fitting that the only good news on the Official World Golf Ranking is the elevation of Casey Jarvis to just outside the top 300.
Jarvis missed the cut in the Challenge Tour’s Kaskáda Golf Challenge, but with technical adjustments to the rankings, found himself up three places to 301st on the list. That makes him South Africa’s 19th best player according to the rankings.
Significantly, one of the players past whom he vaulted was Louis Oosthuizen, still on his way down thanks to LIV Golf being unable to allocate any world ranking points to its players. Oosthuizen tumbled 18 places this week, and is now, extraordinarily, South Africa’s 20th best player.
The man who slipped out of the top 20 was JC Ritchie, who fell four places to 307th.
One other player inside South Africa’s top 20 also managed to go up – also due to algorithmic adjustments – and that was Ockie Strydom, who stayed inside the top 150 in the world with his three-place climb to 146th.
For the rest, it’s all down for South Africa’s top players. And, with only four only the PGA Tour, which is truly the only place where solid performances get rewarded properly on the rankings, it’s likely to stay that way for some time – unless those on the DP World Tour have some knock-out results in the near future.
Christiaan Bezuidenhout remains South Africa’s top-ranked golfer, down two places to 80th.
