Yubin Jung carded a closing four-under-par 68 on Friday to win the Sunshine Tour’s Altron Vusi Ngubeni Tournament at Huddle Park Golf Club with a 72-hole total of 16-under-par.
He made eight birdies and four bogeys to edge out runner-up Keelan van Wyk by one shot after Van Wyk charged hard with a closing six-under 66. The pair was well clear of Musiwalo Nthunzwi and amateur Anu Gounden who shared third on nine-under-par.
Jung led going into the final round after opening with a superb seven-under 65. He followed that with a second-round 71, and signed for a four-under 68 for the third round. He started the final round with three consecutive birdies on the first three holes, and picked up another shot on the fifth. But he made bogeys on seven and eight, only to birdie the ninth to turn in three-under 33. He dropped immediately after the turn on the 10th, and again on the 15th. But he had three birdies on the 14th, 16th and 17th to round out his scoring and take the victory.
“I’m really grateful. I felt like my game has been quite good for the last six or seven months. I’ve added more structure to my game and the way I’ve been practicing. I’ve also changed my mental approach towards my game and it’s paid off,” said Jung.
“I’ve got some goals for this season and my goal will be to make the top 50 on the Luno Order of Merit. It means the world to all of us to be able to play in this Altron Vusi Ngubeni Tournament because it gives us the opportunity to play professional golf for a living.”
Down in a share of fifth, Siyanda Mwandla had the round of the day with a seven-under 65. His tournament total of eight-under was three ahead of veteran James Kamte and amateur Steven le Roux.
The top 15 players and ties earned their Sunshine Tour cards for the 2022-23 season, and the balance of the 53 players who made the cut will be eligible to play on the Big Easy Tour.
