James Kingston charged hard on Sunday, but he fell just short of pulling off a win as he finished second by one stroke in the Legends Tour’s WCM Mexico Senior Open at Punta Mita Golf Club in Nayarit, Mexico.

Kingston’s closing nine-under-par 63 took him to 16-under-par for the 54-hole tournament, and he nearly managed to stop Steven Alker from pulling off yet another win in an incredible season for the New Zealander. Alker, who won the Charles Schwab Cup for topping the rankings on the PGA Tour Champions., closed with a six-under 66.

Kingston set off in business-like fashion, with birdies on one and three getting him going in his chase. He dropped a shot on the seventh, but that was a signal for him to put pedal to the metal. He made birdies on eight and nine, made it three in a row with another on the 10th, and then made eagle on the par-five 11th. He reeled off another three birdies in a row on 15, 16 and 17, and a par on 18 left him just one short of forcing a play-off.

Keith Horne finished well with a five-under-par 67 lifting him to eight-under and a share of 10th.

Adilson Da Silva had an uncharacteristically quiet tournament, and his closing two-under 70 left him in 26th on four-under. He still leads the tour rankings, however, with Kingston in seventh and Horne in sixth ahead of the MCB Tour Championship in Mauritius on December 6.
