Konig makes 7 birdies to take share of 36-hole lead in Germiston

England’s Harry Konig made seven birdies in his four-under-par 68 on Tuesday to stretch his score after 36 holes to 10-under-par, giving him a share of a three-shot lead in the second round of the Big Easy IGT Challenge Tour’s Race to Q-School #2 at Germiston Golf Club.

He made three bogeys too, and, just as he did in the first round, he matched the score of Ricky Hendler as the pair pulled clear of the pursuers in the field. Hendler also had seven birdies and three bogeys in his 68, and he and Konig were comfortably clear of amateur Willie Olivier, who had the round of the day with an eight-under-par 68 which vaulted him into third at seven-under.

Slade Pickering and Sentanio Minnie were in a share of fourth on five-under-par, with Maritz Wessels and Brandon Gildenhuys in a share of sixth on two-under. Rounding out the top 10 were Dylan Kok, Bryandrew Roelofsz, Kai-Alexander Brandkamp and amateur Andrej Skrbinsek on one-under.

Konig made four birdies on the front nine, with bogeys on three and eight seeing him turn in two-under-par 34. With birdies on 13, 15 and 16, he would have had a reasonable expectation of being able to finish five-under, but a dropped shot on the par-three 18th put paid to that.

Olivier’s superb round didn’t have any bogeys in it. After three pars in a row to start, he went birdie-eagle-birdie from the fourth to the sixth, and carded five threes in a row with a par-three on the third and the seventh bracketing his great run. On the homeward nine, he made birdies on 12 and 13 and on 16 and 17.
