Danielle du Toit made two late birdies on Friday to get herself within striking distance of the top 10 after the second round of the Ladies European Tour’s Amundi German Masters at Golf & Country Club Seddiner See near Berlin.
The LET rookie had two birdies and two bogeys to her name through 15 holes, and, at one-over for the tournament, was set to be some way off the pace in tough and windy conditions that had lasted through the first two rounds and were forecast to endure throughout the rest of the tournament too.
But she picked up successive birdies on 16 and 17 and she jumped to one-under after a day on which only 15 players emerged with 36-hole totals that were under par.
That left her just three strokes off the lead which was held by local favourite Alexandra Forsterling of Germany at four-under after she carded a two-under-par 70. Forsterling had a one-stroke lead over compatriots Patricia Schmidt, the returning Sandra Gal and amateur Helen Briem, and England’s Bronte Law.
Five players shared sixth on two-under, and Du Toit was part of a five-way share of 11th.
One stroke behind du Toit – and all in with a shot at the title with decent showings over the weekend – were countrywomen Nicole Garcia, Cara Gorlei and Lee-Anne Pace. Garcia matched the second-best round of the day with her three-under 69, while Gorlei overcame two double-bogeys on her way to a one-over 73. Pace, like Du Toit, had a two-under-par 70.
