Thriston Lawrence dropped just a single shot on Thursday in the opening round of the DP World Tour’s Rolex Series event, the BMW PGA Championship, at Wentworth, on his way to a four-under-par 68 and a share of 15th.
He dropped that single shot on the par-three 10th, after he had made birdies on the fourth and the sixth. He bounced right back from the bogey with a birdie on the 11th, and then he made two birdies in a row on the 17th and 18th.
Up ahead of him, Matthew Baldwin went bogey-free on his way to the lead with his superb seven-under-par 65. He was one clear of Niklaas Norgaard of Denmark and Belgium’s Thomas Detry. There were 11 players in a share of fourth on five-under, including Rory McIlroy, who bogeyed the last, Robert MacIntyre, Shane Lowry and Billy Horschel. Lawrence shared 15th with, amongst others, Danny Willett and Aaron Rai.
Dylan Frittelli opened with a level-par 72 for a share of 75th, while Justin Harding, George Coetzee and Jayden Schaper were all on two-over-par 74. Louis de Jager was on four-over and Ockie Strydom on six-over.
