Zander Lombard carded a one-under-par 71 on Friday in the second round of the DP World Tour’s Commercial Bank Qatar Masters at Doha Golf Club in Doha, Qatar, to make his 18th consecutive cut and be in contention for yet another weekend.
In tougher, windier conditions on the second day, Lombard opened his round with a pair of successive bogeys on the 10th, and just a single birdie on his outward nine saw him turn in one-over. He returned to level-par with a birdie on the second after the turn, but he went back to one-over with a bogey on the fourth. Successive birdies on five and six saw him reach six-under at the halfway mark.
He was three strokes behind the 36-hole leader, Haydn Barron of Australia, who put together a bogey-free 67 to move to nine-under. That gave him a two-stroke edge over compatriot Harrison Endycott and Japan’s Riyuka Hoshino, who each signed for a four-under 68.
Two shots behind Lombard and in a share of 16th place was Ockie Strydom, in the midst of another good week. He had his second two-under 70 to move to four-under.
Louis de Jager, Hennie du Plessis, Jaco Prinsloo and Jacques Kruyswijk were on three-under in a share of 23rd, and Thriston Lawrence and Jayden Schaper each added a second-round 70 to their total to move to a share of 38th on two-under-par.
Casey Jarvis also had a 70 to move to one-under and a share of 45th.
Bradon Stone, Darren Fichardt, Wilco Nienaber, Dylan Frittelli and Pieter Moolman all missed the cut.
