Herman Loubser is a fast player, and he showed he is a fast finisher too on Wednesday as he raced to a six-stroke victory in the Big Easy IGT Challenge Tour’s Race to Q-School #4 at Wanderers Golf Club.

Loubser carded a four-under-par 67 to move to 15-under-par for the tournament, which gave him a six-stroke edge over runners-up Kyle McClatchie and Ricky Hendler. Amateur Willie Olivier and Gregory McKay shared fourth place on seven-under-par.

“It was a lot closer than it looks,” said Loubser. “It was only really on the 11th that I was able to pull away. Kyle got a little unlucky with his ball coming to rest against a rake in the bunker, and he really had a difficult shot. He ended up making bogey, and I made birdie, and it was at that point that the gap opened up.”

Loubser had started his round with a birdie on the first, but he dropped a shot on the par-three sixth to give up the one-stroke lead he had eked out over McClatchie. He got back in front with a pair of birdies on eight and none, but McClatchie pulled one back with a birdie on 10.

Then came the action on the 11th, from which point McClatchie’s challenge rather fell away as he made two more bogeys on 13 and 15. Loubser, on the other hand, picked up another birdie on 13, and that made sure he was home and hosed.

Hendler, like Loubser, also finished with a four-under-par 67 to climb into a share of second with McClatchie. His was a bogey-free card, and showed how good his form currently is.

McKay, who won last week on the circuit, overcame three successive bogeys from five to seven to card a one-under 70 for his share of fourth, while Olivier had a three-under 68.

Loubser is sitting waiting to see if top amateur Casey Jarvis will turn professional ahead of the Sunshine Tour’s Final Stage Qualifying School. If he doesn’t, then Loubser will have regained his Sunshine Tour card.

“In the meantime, I’m preparing to play in Q-School,” said Loubser, “and I’m pretty happy with my game as things stand. I’ve been stroking the ball well for a while, but my putting has come good, and I’m very pleased with that.”
