Retief Goosen carded the lowest final round of the tournament on Sunday, with his seven-under-par 65 lifting him into a share of 12th place in the PGA Tour Champions’ Constellation Furyk & Friends at Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville, Florida.
The two-time US Open champion overcame a poor start to the tournament, when he opened with a two-over-par 74, with a closing round which included eight birdies and a bogey. With his second round of one-under 71, he moved to six-under for the tournament.
He was eight shots behind the winner, Tommy Gainey of the United States. Gainey closed with a six-under 66 to hold off fellow-countryman Cameron Percy, whose three-under 69 left him two strokes behind Gainey’s 54-hole total of 14-under-par.
Goosen, who started the round on the 10th hole in a share of 40th, was quickly into his stride with birdies on his opening two holes. His sole bogey came on his third hole, the 12th, when he was unable to get up and down from the greenside intermediate rough. He followed that drop with a birdie on 13, and made two more on 15 and 16 ahead of the turn. He picked up his remaining strokes with birdies on three, six and eight.
His performance projected him to climb on place on the Charles Schwab Cup rankings from ninth to eighth.
