Doug McGuigan, playing under the Scottish flag, carded a one-over-par 73 in the third round of the Senior Open Championship at Carnoustie Golf Club to move into a share of 29th.

At six-over-par for the championship, he is some way off the lead which was held by KJ Choi of Korea, who carded a two-under-par 70 in the third round, despite making two consecutive double-bogeys on the 15th and 16th.

Choi, at eight-under, led by one from Australian left-hander Richard Green, with India’s Arjun Atwal in third on six-under. Paul Broadhurst was on four-under in fourth, Angel Cabrera of Argentina in fifth on three-under and Ireland’s Padraig Harrington Canadian Stephen Ames shared sixth on two-under-par.

McGuigan opened with a birdie on the first, and made another on the 12th. His cause was helped by an eagle-three on the 14th, but he dropped shots on the eighth, ninth and 18th.

He shared 29th with Keith Horne who had a level-par 72 with one birdie and a bogey, and with Retief Goosen, who had a one-over 73 with two birdies and three bogeys.

Adilson Da Silva was a shot back on seven-over through 54 holes after a two-over-par 74 in the third round put him in a share of 42nd.
