Keegan McLachlan overcame a tough opening nine on Thursday to hold on for a two-stroke win in the Bushveld Tour’s Hamilton’s Series #4 at Centurion Country Club.
McLachlan, who led from start to finish, had two bogeys on his card early on, on the second and third holes, and he was up against it with the chasing pack. But he steadied things with birdies on five and eight before dropping another shot on the ninth. It was up and down again after the turn with a birdie on 10 and a bogey on 11, before he reeled off three birdies in succession from the 13th to the 15th to make certain of the victory.
His eventual two-under-par 70 was matched by Regan Steyn, who finished second on 11-under-par for the tournament.
Jason Froneman and amateur Charl Barnard were the strongest of the chasers, each carding a five-under-par 67 as they finished on nine-under and eight-under in third and fourth respectively.
It was the final event of the series, and Willem Swart came seventh with a closing one-under 71 to reach four-under. That was enough to see him top the order of merit for the series, giving him the winner’s share of the R40,000 purse which was R15,000.
