Keegan McLachlan fired a seven-under-par 65 at Rondebosch Golf Club on Tuesday to lead 10 qualifiers into the Bain’s Whisky Cape Town Open.

It was a single-bogey effort from McLachlan just down the road from the course where the main tournament will be played, Royal Cape Golf Club, starting on Thursday. Having made four birdies on each nine, he dropped a shot on the 18th, but was well clear of Luke Brown, Kyle de Beer and Conner MacKenzie, who shared second on six-under-par.

Joe Long of England, Etan Smith and Callum Mowat were on five-under in a share of fifth, and five players were on four-under in a share of eighth. In the resultant play-off between those five for the remaining three spots, Jason Smith, Erhardt Lambrechts and James Mack held out to get into the main tournament, with veteran Doug McGuigan and Vaughn van Deventer missing out.
