He came within a hair’s breadth of an ace on Friday, and that helped Dylan Frittelli to a five-under-par 65 in the second round of the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic at PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Frittelli started his round on the 10th with a bogey, but he made five birdies and one more bogey by the time he reached the seventh hole on his homeward nine. His tee shot on the 196-yard seventh pitched just on the green, and rolled towards the hole. Had it had one more revolution, it would have dropped. He followed that birdie with another on the eighth, and he climbed to four-under-par for the tournament and a share of 16th.

Darkness meant play in the second round was suspended with just one match still to finish play. Safe in the clubhouse and in a one-stroke lead on 10-under after a six-under 66 was Justin Suh of the United States. In second on nine-under was countryman Chris Kirk, with another American, Ryan Gerard sharing third with England’s Ben Taylor on eight-under.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout went one-over for a 71 in his second round and slipped to a share of 37th heading into the weekend. MJ Daffue also made it to the weekend on the number at one-over after a second round of three-under 67, as did Garrick Higgo with a four-under 66.

Erik van Rooyen missed the cut.
